Thanksgiving is on the 4th Thursday of November. The "first Thanksgiving" was celebrated by Pilgrims in October 1621. It lasted 3 days and was attended by 90 Wampanoag people and 53 Mayflower survivors. George Washington proclaimed a Thanksgiving in December 1777 to celebrate the defeat of the British. In June 1870, President Ulysses S. Grant signed the Holidays Act that made Thanksgiving a yearly holiday. In October 1941, Congress fixed the last Thursday date. Since 1924, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade has been held every year. The parade features floats with themes, musical performances, character balloons, TV personalities, and marching bands. The last float is Santa Claus, the beginning of the Christmas season. The perception of Thanksgiving among Native Americans is not universally negative and some do celebrate the holiday. The day after Thanksgiving is also Native American Heritage Day, to pay tribute to Native Americans for their many contributions to the US.

Veterans Day is on November 11th, to honor veterans of the US Armed Forces. Major hostilities of WWI were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. A Congressional Act approved in May 1938, made November 11th each year a legal holiday. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the bill into law in May 1954. 2 minutes of silence is recommended to be observed at 2:11 PM EST. While it is commonly printed as Veteran's Day or Veterans' Day, the VA states that Veterans Day is the official spelling "because it is not a day that 'belongs' to veterans, it is a day for honoring all veterans."
