Test Preparation Tools At The Library

Peterson's Test Prep
Thanks to the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners, the Falmouth Public Library now provides access to Peterson’s Test Prep, an online resource that allows you to take practice tests.  It has the PSAT, ACT, SAT, and ASSET tests, as well as the MCAT, LSAT, and GRE. For those new to the United States, it offers practice content for the TOEFL and US Citizenship exam.  For those considering careers instead of college, there are practice tests for licensing exams in fields from nursing to law enforcement to cosmetology.  There are checklists and advice for students (and their parents) who are contemplating college, scholarship searches, and advice about financial aid applications. For job seekers there’s a whole section on career exploration, including a trade school search and resume advice.

Access is free when you follow the link from the Falmouth Public Library’s online resources (look under Education!). Need help learning how to use this resource? Ask at the Reference Desk or call 508-457-2555 extension 7 and make an appointment with one of our staff who can get you started.

"Director Alfred Hitchcock's apocalyptic, allegorical thriller centers on an avian assault on a California coastal town, where ferocious fowl fall upon a chicken farmer, a schoolyard full of children and a socialite."

Therapeutic Qi Gong consists of 36 repeated movements that target the muscles and joints of the body from head to toe. The movements are done slowly and gently and incorporate deep breathing to help you focus on yourself during this time, making this routine a meditative one in addition to its stretching, coordination and balance challenges.

No mat is needed, but comfortable clothing is. Socks are encouraged; shoes that are flat and not too supportive are ok; athletic sneakers, of course, are fine if you need them.

Afghanistan: The Untamable Kingdom:1750 - 2022 with Michael McNaught
Wednesday, 11/2 1pm–2:15pm  (Class will continue into first week of November due to skipped week.)

Over the past thirty or forty years, few countries have had a more devastating impact on the world stage than Afghanistan. Situated as it is at the crossroads of Asia and the Middle East, Afghanistan has been a thorn in the side of Western powers since the mid-18th century.  Underestimated and profoundly misunderstood by Western cultures, the country has been a source of endless political and military frustration to Britain, Russia, India, and most of its neighbors. This course will examine the historical background of today's events, and perhaps explain why Afghanistan has never been "tamed" by either the great powers, or any of its immediate neighbors, since the days of Alexander the Great.

"One late spring evening in 2010, Shannan Gilbert went missing.  No one who had heard of her disappearance thought much about had happened to to the twenty-four-year-old until seven months later.  Lost Girls is a portrait of unsolved murders in an idyllic part of America, of the underside of the Internet, and the secrets we keep without admitting to ourselves that we keep them."

The Corrections
by Jonathan Franzen
