Come enjoy two beautiful full days of free informative lectures and presentations, tours of our spectacular gardens, as well as a Craft Market. We’ve partnered with Marketspace Vendor Events this year for our market and have a huge turnout already –  34 plus juried craft vendors – many new! Our featured food vendor for Saturday is Chef D’s featuring artisian grilled cheese – Chef Dorant has deep roots in Jamaica coupled with classic French culinary training. Visit his website here. On Sunday our featured food vendor is Ms. Fu’s Yummy Food Truck featuring Asian home cooked meals – visit their website here. Music by Rupert and Scheetz can be enjoyed from around the lunch hour, 12 – 2,  a mix of bluegrass and Americana. Saturday, September 2nd
9:30 – Bringing in the Harvest with Louise Hyde, Founder
One of the farm’s founders, gardener extraordinaire, cook and author of our cookbook ‘Favorite Recipes from Well-Sweep.’ Come learn Louise’s knowledge on canning, freezing, drying and preserving your garden. Use these new skills to make the most of your herbs and vegetables before the first frost.

9:30 – Formal Herb Garden Tour with Patrick McDuffee
Take a walk with Patrick McDuffee, the 3rd generation of Well-Sweep, on a tour of our Formal Herb Garden in its full late season splendor. Learn the history, lore and uses of both exotic and familiar herbs. Patrick is the grandson of lecturer and collector Cyrus Hyde, carrying on his stories while providing his own insight gained from his B.S. in Biology and enthusiasm for medicinal herbs and the interesting uses of plants.

10:30 – Fall Native Perennials with David Hyde, Owner
Join David Hyde, owner of Well-Sweep, on a presentation on great fall perennial natives and nativars. Learn how colorful and unique natives can be, the benefits of these beauties and how to introduce them into the garden and keep them happy. David will cover selecting, transplanting, growing, and maintaining them – as well as some of his favorites. Discover how to support our indigenous bird, butterfly and insect populations.

12:00 – Mushrooms & Fungi with Olga Tzogas of Smugtown Mushrooms
Mushrooms and fungi have an ancient story that connects humans and all life to them. Step into the world of Mycology with Olga Tzogas of Smugtown Mushrooms for a lecture on the basics of mushrooms and fungi, their biology and how they exist in nature. Learn how to use fungi to build up our soils, reduce erosion and supply us with food and medicine. Enter into the ‘wood wide web’ as you learn the important ecological role of fungi and how to integrate them into our systems by growing and eating them.

1:00 – Sensory Garden Tour with Patrick McDuffee
All ages are welcome to take a walk and expand your senses with Patrick McDuffee, the 3rd generation of Well-Sweep, on a tour of our Formal Herb Garden. This tour will focus on fragrance and flavors but will also cover some history, lore and uses of both exotic and familiar herbs. Patrick is the grandson of lecturer and collector Cyrus Hyde, carrying on his stories while providing his own insight gained from his B.S. in Biology and enthusiasm for medicinal herbs and the interesting uses of plants.

1:00 – Winter Wellness Wisdom with Kerry Adams, RH AHG
Fall is the perfect time to strengthen the body for the winter months and harvest the plant medicines you will need. Join Kerry Adams, a practicing herbalist of 49 years, as she covers her choices for strengthening the immune system in preparation for the winter months. She will also give guidance for common winter illnesses based on illness symptoms and the energetics of our plant allies. This free introductory course will have a Part 2 Preparations class on Sept. 30th.

2:30 – Far-Out & Funky Plants with David Hyde, Owner
Join David Hyde, owner of Well-Sweep, for Funky & Far-out Plants for your home and garden. With a family plant collection that spans 54 years – unique and interesting cultivars abound. David will cover a wide array of far-out houseplants, fabulous fruit trees for your garden or containers, funky succulents and more. Featuring figs, citrus, jasmine and more. He will go over their care requirements and how to maintain healthy specimens throughout the year. You’re going to want a bigger window and garden after learning about all these beauties.

3:30 – Giant Carnivorous Terrarium Installation with Patrick McDuffee
Before Well-Sweep expanded its carnivorous plant collection in 2013, Patrick would fill fish tanks with his grandfather, Cyrus Hyde. Before that, he would propagate them in a laboratory setting. Watch and learn about these native wonders as he fills a massive fish tank terrarium with fly traps, pitcher plants, sundews and butterworts.

11:00 – Fantastic Fall Perennials with David Hyde, Owner
Join David Hyde, avid plant enthusiast, noted lecturer and owner of Well-Sweep Herb Farm’s family business. Come enjoy a presentation on knock-out gorgeous fall perennials for a variety of conditions. David will select some of his favorite classic, unusual and rare hardy plants and how to provide them with the proper conditions for success in your garden.

11:00 – Seed Saving & Plant Breeding with Nate Kleinman of EFN
Seed collecting helps to preserve history and take us into the future through new selections. Nate Kleinman is co-founder/co-director of Experimental Farm Network (EFN), director of seed and farming operations for Ujamaa Cooperative Farming Alliance (UCFA), and a contributor to the Well-Sweep collection, trading with Cyrus and Patrick through the years. Come learn the diversity of techniques and tools Nate employs as he collects around the world.

12:15 – Dark Green for Halloween with Deirdre Larkin, Plant Historian
In this illustrated talk, horticulturist and plant historian Deirdre Larkin will conjure the plants of power used in seasonal folk magic and witchcraft, some as agents of blessing and protection, and others as instruments of transformation and seduction. We’ll consider the use of green and growing things in love magic, weather magic, and divination.  Deirdre was formerly Managing Horticulturist at The Met Cloisters in Manhattan. She was associated with their gardens for nearly 25 years, and was the originator of and principal contributor to The Medieval Garden Enclosed blog from 1998-2013.

1:30 – Bringing Back the Butterflies with Lori Princiotto
In July 2022, the International Union for Conservation of Nature put the Monarch butterfly on the endangered list. Lori Myers Princiotto, a teacher and gardener, has established home, school, and community gardens, specifically concentrating on attracting butterflies and beneficial pollinators. She was gifted a few caterpillars to raise with her son in 2016, which led to her raising over 400 monarchs in 2017. Since then, she has become a self-taught butterfly aficionado, supplementing her gardens with plants from Well-Sweep. Come learn how to attract butterflies to your gardens by planting host plants and nectar sources and help save the Monarchs in peril.

2:30 – Afternoon Herbal Tea: Ginger with Cheryl Karcher of Hilltop Herbals
Come celebrate Ginger, the International Herb Association’s herb of 2023, with a delightful afternoon herbal tea and ginger refreshment with Cheryl Karcher of Hilltop Herbals. Sip samples of fresh and dried ginger and learn what herbs compliment those flavors. Recipes as well the medicinal benefits of these tea blends will be shared. Cheryl studied for four years with David Winston, RH, (AHG), graduating from his 2-year Clinical Herbalist Training, Therapeutics, & Graduate Programs. She combines these studies with years of experience in the professional culinary industry to create fine herbal products and individualized healing protocols for her clients.

2:30 – Scented Geraniums with Patrick McDuffee
Our geranium collection reached 84 varieties of pelargoniums, or scented geraniums, this year. Patrick of Well-Sweep Herb Farm has grown a little obsessed, and with every scent imaginable, he believes everyone should have at least one geranium on their window for year-round fragrance or color. Come smell and learn about the most unique and wonderful flavors and how to keep them happy for years to come.
