Door County Triathlon - Race Week Newsletter - July 11, 2022

Sports and Recreation

July 12, 2022

Crowd of 2,000+ triathletes to descend on Door County this weekend!

The Good News: Water temps at Murphy Park climbed over the weekend and were hovering just over 70 degrees yesterday afternoon. Forecasts for light winds will hopefully mean calm surface conditions for the swim both days.

The Not So Good News: There is a likelihood of showers in Door County on Saturday morning. Door County Triathlon organizers and public safety personnel are closely monitoring the situation. Rain will not prevent the race from proceeding, however, thunderstorms or any likelihood of lightning could result in a delay. We will communicate with our audience via email and social media throughout the week as the situation evolves. Because Door County is a peninsula surrounded by Lake Michigan, the weather conditions can change dramatically within a matter of hours. Fingers crossed!

The Silver Lining: Half Iron participants can expect cloud cover during the swim and bike portions of the event, reducing likelihood of overheating and/or dehydration.

ROAD DISRUPTIONS: Outbound local traffic and departing participants are advised to depart NORTHBOUND on County G/Horseshoe Bay Road while the events are in progress on both days. On Sunday during the Half Iron event, the County Sheriff's Department will close County G/Horseshoe Bay Road southbound at Highway 42 from approximately 11 am until 3 pm. In addition, the section of Horseshoe Bay Road that goes down the hill from County G to Murphy Park will be closed from approximately Noon until 4 pm. Inbound spectator traffic is advised to park along County G at the top of the hill in and walk or take a free shuttle ride down or up the hill during these hours. Inbound local traffic may take South Trail to residences, Egg Harbor Beach and The Alpine Resort.   CLICK HERE for a detailed list of road disruptions.

CUT-OFF TIMES: The Sprint Triathlon Course will close at NOON or exactly 3 hours after the last participant begins. Everybody has always finished under this threshold. If you can't finish by noon, however, we'll still be there, the party will still be raging and in all likelihood, the timing mat will still be turned on. Just try to finish by noon. On Sunday, we're less flexible about the cut-off time due to public safety concerns. Half Iron participants MUST complete the swim and bike portion of the event prior to 2:00 pm in order to begin the run. The Half Iron Course will close at a rolling pace of 16 minutes per mile beginning at 2:00 pm with the finish line closing at 5:30 pm, or 8.5 hours after the last participant begins. If you're nervous and uncertain about whether your slow place will get you back from the Half Iron bike ride by 2:00 pm, you might consider opting into wave one (aka "elite/early wave") since the only thing you "lose" is age group award eligibility. Just inform Linda at the Troubleshooting Table on Friday or Saturday that you are opting into wave one.

AWARDS CEREMONIES will take place at 11:30 am on Saturday for the Sprint Triathlon and at 3:00 pm on Sunday for the Half Iron Triathlon. Both ceremonies will be on the Bridge Up Brewing Company Stage immediately after the bands finish. Awards ceremonies for the Door County Medical Center Kids' Triathlon take place every 30 minutes starting at 3:00 pm, shortly after each wave finishes.
