Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings concert brings trumpets, trombones and pianos together

Detroit Chamber Winds & Strings continues its 2022-2023 season with a night of trumpets, trombones and pianos. On November 18, at 7:30 p.m., DCWS trombonist David Jackson is joined by Pittsburg Symphony trumpeter Neal Berntsen and University of Michigan Assistant Professor of Music Amy I-Lin Cheng. The concert takes place at Hagopian World of Rugs in Birmingham.

Jackson, professor of trombone at U-M’s School of Music, Theatre & Dance, enjoys an active career as a performer and teacher. He is recognized as a supporter of new music who has premiered numerous compositions for the trombone including “Angel of Dreamers” by Eric Ewazen, for trombone, baritone voice and strings, and “Big” by Adolphus Hailstork for trombone and piano.

Berntsen joined the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra trumpet section in March 1997, having been appointed at the invitation of Music Director Lorin Maazel in 1996. He received a Bachelor of Music from the University of Puget Sound and a Master of Music from Northwestern University. He is a former member of the Chicago Lyric Opera Orchestra and the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra.

Born in Taiwan, Cheng has appeared on the concert stage in the United States, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark, Taiwan, Brazil, Canada, France and Israel. Late pianist Claude Frank described her as “a brilliant, sensitive, imaginative and most beguiling pianist.” She has presented recitals at venues such as the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Merkin Concert Hall in New York City, Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall, and National Concert Hall in Taipei.

This is the third concert of the DCWS season. The Nightnotes concert series is known for being a casual and intimate environment for attendees to enjoy performances created by the featured musicians, as well as interact with the musicians and ask them questions.

The concert will open with a performance by one of Jackson’s undergraduate students from U-M. This is part of a DCWS program to spotlight the next generation of performers. The program began in 2021 for the organization’s 40-year anniversary celebration.

Four additional Nightnotes concerts are scheduled for the season, as well as concerts from the organization’s other two series, the Structurally Sound and the Signature series. More information about each concert can be found at detroitchamberwinds.org/performances.

Subscriptions to the full season are on sale with the purchase of five or more concerts. Visit detroitchamberwinds.org/subscriptions for more information and to purchase.
