Dear Library Friend,

As of today, we are launching our new library catalog. We are excited about how easy it is to use including the integration of the databases so faster and easier searching for you.

Talking about databases we have a brand new one for you – Statista! This database is a leading provider of market and consumer data. It is an excellent source for business and  industry research. Just sign-in to your library account using your Delray Beach Library card number and PIN, then click on Statista and start your research.

We also have a fun and unique volunteer opportunity available during this time. We are seeking warm, engaging, young-at-heart grownups to be Book Buddies from 11 am to 12 noon. You can be that kind, non-judgmental friend with whom a reluctant reader can feel comfortable practicing their reading. They can read with you from 11 am until lunch is served at 11:30, and continue reading as they eat, or you can read to them. Make this a memorable and rewarding summer for both of you. Book Buddies need not be available all five days each week. The schedule is flexible. For more information and to receive a volunteer application, please send an email to [email protected].

We continue with our strategic planning process. Last week we held focus groups for educators, parents, business and community leaders, and the general public. Discussions led by the strategic planning consultants were robust and valuable. To date 407 people have filled out the survey. We would love to hear from more people. In fact, people who don’t use the Library are welcome to fill it out. So, think about some of your friends and family and ask them to fill out the survey HERE. You have until May 27 to fill out the survey. If you are bursting with ideas and want to share them directly with the consultants, you are welcome to email them at: [email protected]

Stay well and happy reading!

What’s Happening in Circulation!

This week we are going to highlight two women authors; one writing about the historical past (albeit a past visited by a time-traveling nurse), "Go Tell the Bees that I am Gone" by Diana Gabaldon, the other about a world of dark fantasy and magic, "The House of Sky and Breath" by Sarah J. Maas.

First, "Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone" is the 9th entry in the ever-popular Outlander series by Ms. Gabaldon and continues the romantic adventures of Claire Randall, who time-travels to 18th Scotland and into the waiting arms of Highland warrior, Jamie Fraser. “In essence, these novels are big, fat historical fiction,” Ms. Gabaldon tells us via her website, and she has hit the nail on the head (well, of course she would). In this, her 9th of a projected 10 Highlander novels, the couple find themselves in the North Carolina backcountry as the Revolutionary War simmers. Fun stuff.

Now, to the dark, world-building fantasy side of the ledger: Sarah J. Maas’s House of Sky and Breath is the exciting sequel to her New York Times bestseller House of Earth and Blood; continuing the mind-boggling world of Crescent City – a world of demons, fallen angels, and sizzling romance. From the flyleaf: “Sarah J Maas weaves a captivating story of a world about to explode – and the people who will do anything to save it.” Ms. Maas describes and vital, vivid fantasy world, one you will lose yourself in for hours. Enjoy!
