This Day in History
Many know the book Little Women, but do you know the story behind the author? Louisa May Alcott was born on November 29th, 1832, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was a nurse during the civil war, where she caught typhoid fever and pneumonia. She was given a toxic mercury compound which caused her to suffer from mercury poisoning for the rest of her life. She was an early suffragette and was the first woman registered to vote in Concord, Massachusetts. She wrote Little Women in under three months.  Much of Little Women’s characters are based off of real people in Louisa May Alcott’s life. She grew up with three sisters, and they provided the very inspiration for Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy in Little Women. Can you guess which character Louisa May Alcott was? If you guessed Jo March, you are absolutely correct. Much of Jo’s beliefs mirrored her own.  Alcott died in 1888 of a stroke at 55 years old
