Employee Spotlight: Colin Duffy, Assistant City Manager

Q: What is your position and how long have you been with the City?

A: My position is Assistant City Manager and I've just been with the City for a little over one month. Q: What are some of the main responsibilities of your job?

A: My role provides support to the City Manager with all facets of the City's management. I will help coordinate special projects and programs, represent the City and its interests, work to accomplish the organization's goals, and help make administrative decisions that impact the entire organization. In my mind, though, this position is really about balancing the needs of the employees and organization, with the direction of the Council, within the interest of the public.

Q: If you're not at work, what are you up to?

A: I'm an avid runner. You can catch me out on Clear Creek trail or any other great trails around the area as I'm training for my second marathon. I love to explore new restaurants around KC and try to recreate some of my favorite dishes at home, although they rarely compare. I also like to hang out with my friends and family and play board games, cards, and my trusty Nintendo 64.

Q: What are you most looking forward to in your new position?

A: I'm so excited to work with a truly dedicated team and continue to move Shawnee forward. What sold me on this position was the employees of Shawnee. It's rare to find an organization with great culture and employees that are passionate about their work and each other.

Q: What's something else we don't know about you?

A: I help operate my family's farm and a small grass-fed beef company just outside of Chapman, Kansas. I've been fortunate enough to have the experience of working on our farm since I could stand, although I didn't see it that way growing up. Did I mention I'm unbeatable in Mario Kart on N64?

"I love getting to see the product of my work as I improve the quality of life for residents. The work not only interests and challenges me, but I get to do it alongside my work family and in an environment where I feel valued and supported." -Caitlin Gard, Deputy City Manager

"Every day is different! You never know what the day will bring." -Heather Inich, Customer Service Specialist

"I love working in an organization that values and tries new ideas. Being in downtown Shawnee near so many great places to eat and socialize is a huge perk, too!" -Colin Duffy, Assistant City Manager

"I love that no matter what task is on hand, my coworkers and I find ways to have fun while getting work done. In the News: Wild Bill Hickok Installation

Wild Bill Hickok found his place in Shawnee last month when he was installed at Trail Scout Park. Local artist Maretta Kennedy has been hard at work sculpting this 13-foot tall, 2300 pound sculpture!

Bill Hickok plays an important part in Shawnee's history. To learn all about it, head to Trail Scout Park, located near the northeast corner ofc Shawnee Mission Parkway and Nieman Road.

Thank you to the hardworking staff for taking the time to ensure this installation ran smoothly. We are so excited for Bill to "wave" residents westward as they enter Shawnee! To learn more, visit cityofshawnee.org/news!
