The CaSequoia Theater Proposallifornia Film Institute (CFI), owner of the historic Sequoia Theater, has submitted a proposal to fully renovate and convert the two-screen Sequoia Theater with 604 seats into a new cinema and education center with four screens in theaters of various sizes and up to 500 seats, while retaining the historic building façade above the street level. The modifications involve excavation for a basement level, remove interior partitions and the roof structure to create two levels of screening rooms, provide an expanded lobby and a rooftop pavilion with elevator access from basement to rooftop.

The Sequoia Theater is a historic structure that is listed on the Mill Valley Historic Resources Inventory. The proposed renovation project is subject to environmental review pursuant to the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).

On June 14, 2022, the Planning Commission will hold a noticed Study Session for this Design Review proposal. At the Study Session, the Planning Commission will consider the plans and presentation by CFI, receive public input, and provide comments to the applicants about the project design. The Planning Commission will not take final action on the project proposal. Plans and the Staff Report will be posted on the City’s website on June 10, 2022 at: https://www.cityofmillvalley.org/278/Watch-Meetings-Online.
