City Of Middletown News - Enjoy Middletown Events this Weekend!

Government and Politics

August 26, 2022

From: City Of Middletown

Hi folks,
We're enjoying a respite from the extreme heat here in New England, hopefully the rest of y'all are staying cool.

For the first time in nearly 3 years, Resonant Motion's Jazz Up Close will be returning IN PERSON (can you tell I'm excited?) to the Russell Library one month from today (8/27) for the first of two 2022 events. We'll be continuing the "layers of collaboration" theme and welcoming baritone saxophonist Claire Daly and pianist Steve Hudson to play and discuss their compositions.

I'll elaborate on the event in next month's newsletter, BUT HERE'S THE THING (hopefully I have your attention now) - in keeping with the library's much-appreciated attention to COVID safety, this event has limited seating and requires preregistration (not, for now, the "walk in and stand in the back if you must because it's jam-packed" vibe of years past). Fortunately, yer pal Noah has you covered with the link where you can reserve yourself/selves a seat.

As always, the event is free of charge and open to all, and of course we are grateful for all the support for this event provided by Resonant Motion’s donors, the Friends of the Russell Library, the Middletown Commission on the Arts, and CT Humanities (CTH), with funding provided by the Connecticut State Department of Economic and Community Development/Connecticut Office of the Arts (COA) from the Connecticut State Legislature.

If you can't wait that long to hear me and have a few bucks to spare plus the inclination to contribute to a good cause, you're in luck thanks to my concert this Friday evening in New Britain, CT. The event begins at 6:30 and around 7 I'll be playing an hour long set (with the usual quasi-motivational speaking) of solo piano music to support Charter Oak State College's new scholarship for students with disabilities. The scholarship is named for Bonnie Wheeler, a recent graduate who is afflicted with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, so you can likely imagine why I couldn't say no to participating. You can find information and buy tickets here

And finally there are two more Musician-Aid Requests videos up for your perusal, both in a jazz vein this time around. There's a romp through "I'll Remember April" with drummer Curtis Nowosad and bassist Jonathan Michel and a solo piano rendition, just published today, of Wayne Shorter's "Miyako," the latter a tribute to my friend Claire Randall, with whom I worked on this piece for her senior recital back when she was still my student.

I thank, once again, all those whose generosity towards the musician community in pandemic times has spurred this initiative (which is wrapping up, but there are still a bunch in progress). You can watch all the Musician-Aid videos here.

And tickets are not yet available for my 10/15 album release show at the Side Door Jazz Club, but it's not too early to mark your calendars for that and to start getting excited for the new record! Looking forward to hopefully seeing some folks in the coming months. Keep on keeping cool and taking care of one another.
