Pack up the crew — including the kids and the dog — and head to the Old Town Manassas Holiday Crafts & Treats Fair Oct. 29 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Bring the whole family for some fall fun!

Don't miss the Kids Halloween Parade from 1-1:30 p.m. with "Best Costume" prize awarded, plus a Pets Halloween Parade from 2:30-3 p.m.

Arts & craft vendors will showcase unique gifts perfect for holiday shopping sprees and plenty of yummy sweets & treats will tempt any passerby.

Location is at the Manassas Museum Lawn, 9101 Prince William Street, and entrance is free!

The Hylton Performing Arts Center is a shining example of successful community partnership. It opened its doors in May 2010 on George Mason University's Science Technology Campus in Manassas, and ever since, has been featuring local, regional, national, and international artists and events for all ages.

Soaring nearly nine stories tall with an artistic mix of copper, glass, and masonry, the Hylton is home to two performance venues, an art gallery, and a beautiful two-story grand foyer.

Hylton's mission is to stimulate and transform the region's cultural and economic vitality by presenting diverse performances and programs of artistic expression with the goal of inspiring, educating, and enriching the community.

Hints of History

Got milk?

Manassas and the Virginia Piedmont area certainly did. That's why literally thousands flocked to Manassas for the annual Piedmont Virginia Dairy Festival.

This photo is of the closing ceremony of the fifth annual festival — Friday, Oct. 11, 1935 — at the Portner estate called Annaburg, the City's newest park. This photo shows the coronation of Miss Rebecca Rice, of Fairfax County, Regina V, Queen of the Festival, attended by her two maids of honor and 14 princesses representing each of the 11 counties and three cities participating in the festival.

In the afternoon, "The Milky Way" two-mile parade down Center Street included grand marshals, floats, decorated trucks, tractors, and cars, fire departments and high school bands from surrounding counties, and the Quantico Marine Band.

After the festival, the Nov. 14, 1935 issue of The Manassas Journal reported:

" ... in the historic town of Manassas, 20,000 people on Oct. 11, paid homage to the dairy farmer and the dairy cow. Yes, and there was a Queen, her court, and last but not least, an air tour of the surrounding dairy region in a dirigible [similar to an air blimp] and in planes provided by the festival committee. The whole idea of this affair is to promote and increase the use of dairy products and it's a bang-up good idea."

A "bang-up good idea" for sure. Manassas and milk — a fine pairing, indeed.
