Winter Weather Advisory

Winter is here and temperatures have dipped below freezing. Extreme cold, high winds, and dangerously low wind chills are expected through the weekend. Keep yourself, your loved ones, and your property safe by knowing what to do and who to call in the event of an emergency.

Stay Informed

Weather awareness is key for winter preparedness. Ensure you are utilizing multiple methods of emergency notification such as:

-Text or email alerts from NotifyCoppell

-A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) All-Hazards Radio

-A smartphone application such as The Weather Channel

Keep your phone charged to ensure you receive notifications, and make sure you have access to back-up chargers and batteries in case of a power outage.

Frozen or Burst Pipes

The best defense against frozen pipes is prevention: Insulate exposed pipes, open cabinets under sinks, and allow faucets to drip slightly.

As the weather warms above freezing, any pipes that were frozen may be in danger of bursting. If a water pipe breaks, shut off your water as soon as possible. Check out this instructional video on how to locate, unlock your water meter lid, and turn off the water.

Protect Your Swimming Pool

Even if you have a freeze protector among your pool equipment, you should inspect the pump daily to make sure it’s moving water through the pipes as your pool’s pipes can burst if they freeze.

If you do experience frozen pipes in your pool, shut your water off, turn off power to the pump, and drain the pool pump.

Power Outages

Widespread power outages are NOT expected. However, ensure phones are charged and you have access to back-up chargers and batteries, so you have a way to stay informed.

If you experience a power outage, report it to Oncor, the Transmission and Distribution Service Provider (or TDSP) for Coppell, either online or by calling 888-313-4747.
