Coppell Ranked #1 in Texas for National Night Out

The City of Coppell is proud to announce that its National Night Out (NNO) efforts once again ranked first place in the State of Texas and fourth place in the nation for cities with populations between 15,000 – 50,000. The National Association of Town Watch (NATW) publishes the ranking each year based on citizen participation, law enforcement involvement, organization, and quality of activities.

Stay Weather Aware!

With Tuesday’s tornado warning in Coppell, it’s a great time for a refresher on Coppell’s Outdoor Warning System (OWS) as well as severe weather preparedness. Below are some frequently asked questions and answers to help keep you aware, informed, and safe.

What is the OWS?

The Outdoor Warning System consists of 17 sirens throughout the City of Coppell that sound at 1 pm on the first Wednesday of the month as a test and during an emergency, such as severe weather.

When/why do the sirens sound?

Outside of testing on the first Wednesday of each month, the City of Coppell may sound the sirens because The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning with heavy winds or large hail, or a Tornado Warning that includes the City of Coppell. There are also a few other less common reasons listed on the Emergency Management Department’s page.

Why do the sirens start, stop, then start again?

A default siren activation lasts for three minutes and then times out. Just because the sirens stop, it does not necessarily mean the threat has passed. There may be multiple siren activations with pauses in between. There is no “all clear” signal. Residents should rely on one of the three chosen emergency alert methods mentioned below to know when the threat has passed.

Why is it sometimes hard to hear the OWS while indoors?

Just as the name implies, the Outdoor Warning System is meant to warn those who are outdoors, such as workers, people exercising outside, or those running daily errands, to seek shelter inside. It is not meant to be an effective emergency alert for those already indoors.

How will I know when there’s an emergency?

The City of Coppell’s Emergency Management Department recommends all residents utilize three different methods of emergency notification such as:

-Text or email alerts from NotifyCoppell

-A National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) All-Hazards Radio

-A smartphone app, such as The Weather Channel

With three methods in place, you will always have a way to stay weather aware in case one or two of these methods fail.

What do I do when I hear the sirens or receive an emergency alert notification?

Immediately shelter inside and seek more information. The safest place to be inside a North Texas home or other building is an interior room on the lowest level without windows, such as a bathroom, closet, or under the staircase.

Twelve Days of Coppell

As the holiday shopping season reaches its peak, the City of Coppell is encouraging residents to support local businesses through the Twelve Days of Coppell holiday shopping campaign!

How it works:

Pick up a playing card at City facilities. Each card contains a total of 15 clues that will lead participants to a variety of local stores, restaurants, and boutiques. Participants should solve the clues and take the action described. Once at least 12 clues have been solved, bring your receipts/proof of action to the Coppell Town Center Annex, 265 Parkway Blvd., or submit them via email to be entered into a drawing for a prize!

Unable to pick up a playing card? Download the playing card here or follow along on the City’s FacebookTwitter, and Instagram accounts, where clues will be routinely posted.

Metrocrest Holiday Store

No parent should have to choose between covering the cost of the electric bill and putting gifts under the tree. That's why Metrocrest Services hosts its annual holiday store, staffed by volunteers and supplied by generous North Texans. Through the annual program, registered parents can choose an appointment time to visit the store and pick out gifts for their children, winter coats for the entire family, nonperishable food, stocking stuffers, gift wrap, and (if needed) even a Christmas tree.

Metrocrest Services anticipates serving 1,100+ families and more than 2,500 children in Coppell and our neighboring cities before the store closes on December 20.

“High prices and inflation have affected our neighbors' ability to buy gifts for their children," shares Metrocrest Service’s Chief Operating Officer Nicole Binkley. “Right now, 58 percent of families signed up for the Holiday Program have never used our services before."
