This week at the Cinema we are opening the new comedy/drama from award-winning director Alexander Payne, 'The Holdovers', starring Paul Giamatti.
You can also still catch the winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival, Justine Triet's 'Anatomy of a Fall' - as well as the latest film from director Sofia Coppola, the A24 produced biopic of American icon Priscilla Presley - 'Priscilla'.
Special events this week include screenings of classic films such as 'The Sweet Smell of Success', 'The Best Years of Our Lives', 'The Producers', & 'A Tree Grows in Brooklyn' - along with a wonderful night of stand-up comedy with Rob Barlett, a screening of a new award-winning neo-noir featuring a discussion with filmmaker Loren Marsh, and a special collection of iconic animated shorts from Fleischer Studios.

The Holdovers

From acclaimed director Alexander Payne (Sideways, About Schmidt, Nebraska, The Descendants), The Holdovers follows a curmudgeonly instructor (Paul Giamatti) at a New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. Eventually he forms an unlikely bond with one of them — a damaged, brainy troublemaker (newcomer Dominic Sessa) — and with the school’s head cook, who has just lost a son in Vietnam (Da’Vine Joy Randolph).

Taut, suspenseful, and thrilling until the final moment, the much-lauded winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival is a riveting portrait of a complex woman put on trial for the murder of her spouse. Sandra (Sandra Hüller) is a successful German writer who lives in the French Alps with her husband Samuel (Samuel Theis) and their son. When Samuel is discovered dead in the snow beneath one of their windows, suspicion is quickly aroused. When the investigation proves to be inconclusive, Sandra is ultimately indicted for his murder.

Set among Brooklyn tenements circa 1912, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is a portrait of the Nolans, an Irish-American family living in financially challenging circumstances, often made worse by father Johnny’s drinking and employment problems. But matriarch Katie keeps the family together during all of the obstacles, caring for son Neeley and daughter Francie, as well as Katie’s outspoken, oft-married sister Sissy. But just as Francie’s gift for writing opens up new avenues, more tragic developments test the family’s resolve. Director Elia Kazan’s first film, which is based on Betty Smith’s novel – a bestseller in the U.S. but also one of the most popular books among American soldiers overseas in WWII – is a sensitive, masterful adaptation.

Comedian Rob Barlett!
Rob Bartlett began performing stand-up comedy in 1978. Since then, Rob has become one of the most versatile performers around. He is a successful actor, standup comedian, radio personality, writer, and director. He’s appeared across the U.S. as a Stand-Up Headliner and performed his act on Late Night With David Letterman, Conan O’Brien, The View, and The Today Show. He starred in the Paramount/CBS comedy special What’s Alan Watching?, and has been a guest-star with recurring roles as Security Guard Troy on Ugly Betty, Defense Attorney Milton Schoenfeld on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Bond Attorney Bernie Bukovitz on The Good Wife, and as Police Captain Dwyer on Elementary. He was the voice of ‘Marty the Dog’ in the award winning, animated Kenny The Shark series. He wrote and starred in the Public Television special, Rob Bartlett's Not For Profit T.V. Special produced by CPTV which was nominated for five Emmy Awards and won for Best Writing and Best Entertainment Program.
Rob made his Broadway debut as author and star of More to Love. His Broadway Credits also include ‘Amos Hart’ in Chicago, originating the role of ‘Mr. Mushnik’ in the 2003 Broadway Production of Little Shop of Horrors, ‘Herman' in the 2005 revival of Sweet Charity with Christina Applegate, ‘Speed’, the poker playing crony of Oscar and Felix, in the revival of Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple with Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick, and in the dual roles of ‘Twimble’ and ‘Wally Womper’, in the revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying with Daniel Radcliffe and Nick Jonas.
In 1986, Rob became a regular in-studio guest of Don Imus at radio station WNBC 660AM. When the station was sold and the Imus in The Morning Program moved to the WFAN studios in Astoria, Rob was offered a full-time contract, and, for the next 31 years, wrote and performed some of the show's more popular cast of characters until the program ended in March of 2018.
His Night Before Christmas in Brooklyn, performed by one of his more popular original characters, ‘Sal Monella’, has been a perennial holiday tradition for the past 35 years, posted on countless websites, and downloaded more than 4 Million Times. He currently teaches Acting and Stand-Up Comedy Technique Online at The Rob Bartlett Studio, with students from the U.S., Canada and the U.K.
