ANNUAL MLK TRIBUTE CONCERT: THUNDER


A Chicago staple, Sinfonietta’s treasured annual tradition is known for powerful and inspiring repertoire. This January, bask in a compelling program of dynamic works that features Chicago Sinfonietta's commissioned world premiere by Artist in Residence Kathryn Bostic: Letters From Moral Courage, a work that speaks to making a choice to stand in integrity, truth and fearlessness. Kicking the evening off is Sphinx Medal of Excellence winner, Carlos Simon's Fate Now Conquers, based on life's unforeseeable nature, followed by Valerie Coleman's Umoja, the Swahili word for Unity and the first principal of the holiday Kwanzaa. New Board Leadership and Board Members
This season, Chicago Sinfonietta has seen a change of Board leadership, long-serving Board Chair Scott Hoesman stepped down  this fall 2022, with James L. Weidner, who has been on the Board for 13 years (the same as Hoesman) becoming the current Board Chair.  Genhi Givings Bailey is Vice Chair. The Sinfonietta also welcomed Tonya Rice, Elections Vertical Strategy Leader, Amazon Web Services, Rosalyn Carpenter, Commonspirit Health, Senior VP Chief Diveresity, Equity, Inclusion & Commmunity Impact Officer, Sanchit Madan, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC), Partner to the Board.

PRESIDENT & CEO Takes the Lead
Our President and CEO, Blake-Anthony Johnson, has been recognized several times this 2022 for his work as a leader in the field of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and in business. He was named one of Musical America's 2022 Top 30 Professionals of the Year on December 30, a member of Crain's Chicago Business magazine's Class of 2022 40 Under 40, appointed President and well as CEO of Chicago Sinfonietta, traveled to Europe as part of the City of Chicago Paris-London delegation with World Business Chicago and Mayor Lightfoot, joined The Sir Georg Solti Foundation U.S. Board of Directors, was awarded the Chicago Urban League 2022 Impact Fellowship, the 2022 Brevard Music Center Distinguished Alumni Award and the 2022 Chicago Trust Daniel Burnham Fellowship, .

First EDI Award from Donne
Chicago Sinfonietta received the first EDI award from UK-based Donne Foundation. The foundation, dedicated to achieving gender equality in the music industry, found in its latest research "Equality & Diversity in Global Repertoire" presented by 111 orchestras from 31 countries during the 2021-22 season that Chicago Sinfonietta was "the only orchestra to achieve 50/50 gender equality with an amazing diversity of composers as well."

Major Grants and Awards
Chicago Sinfonietta received a "transformative" $1 million Mellon Foundation award this past July which is being used to further expand community outreach programs.

Composer Kathryn Bostic to complete residency as CS's first Artist in Residence (AIR)
The end of the 2022-23 season marks the completion of Chicago Sinfonietta's first AIR. Ms. Bostic has written two commissioned works for CS, worked with the Freeman Fellows and Community Engagement, Chicago Sinfonietta is honored to have had Ms. Bostic in this posiiton.  Thank you, Kathryn, you've set the bar at a wonderfully high spot!

Freeman Fellowship Program
Chicago Sinfonietta has not only expanded the Fellowship program since 2020, but has renamed the program (originally Project Inclusion, founded by Sinfonietta founder Paul Freeman) and launched its own portal this fall 2022: freemanfellows.org - click here to visit.
