Join us for a free lunchtime outdoor performance as the best of the LINES Ballet community hit the stage from kids, to LINES Teens, BFA and Training Programs, and special guests!  Bring family and friends to celebrate dance in the Bay Area with LINES Ballet. This event is hosted by HeART with LINES, LINES’s program for PreK-8th grades.

Smuin Contemporary Ballet: Open Rehearsal for Dance Series 2 - 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

Watch rehearsal for Smuin's Dance Series 2, which opens on May 3. Dance Series 2 includes a world premiere by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa as well as ballets by Associate Artistic Director Amy Seiwert, Founder Michael Smuin, and Company Artist Brennan Wall.

LOVING THE AIR: Aerial Dance Workshop - 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Flyaway Productions and ZACCHO studio are teaming up to offer a free, off the ground, apparatus-based dance class called LOVING THE AIR. Students will be introduced to dancing on low-flying steel objects. This is an all levels adult class for students age 13 and UP. We cant wait to FLY with you. We will swing, fly and spin.

Self-Breema exercises teach us body-mind connection through the registration of breath, weight, and movement, giving us support for being present. Inspiration for Perspiration- Outdoor Dancing in North Berkeley - 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Since 2022 we've been gathering every week to dance outdoors! There's plenty of space to dance however you like in a special cul-de-sac with shade and sun and no traffic. A diversity of upbeat, uplifting music for the duration, coming from an outdoor sound system.
Get and give dancing inspiration, and enjoy some perspiration if that's your aim.

Harmonizing Our Relationship to Life - 9:30 am - 10:45 am

Can we use the difficulties that come our way and our reactions to them to benefit and grow? Join us to explore how to relate to all aspects of life by using the Breema Principles and practicing Self-Breema exercises, to support living in a more balanced way. This class features instruction and practice of Self-Breema exercises and discussion of the Breema philosophy via Zoom.

Presence in Movement & Touch: Introduction to Breema - 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Breema sees the body as a vehicle for entering into the present moment, where we can experience the innate intelligence and instinctive wisdom of the body. This class explores how the nurturing and dynamic movements of Self-Breema exercises and Breema bodywork support coming to body-mind connection and create an atmosphere of aliveness we can bring to all our activities. One-on-one mini-sessions included.

Soul Sanctuary Dance - Freestyle Community Dance Gathering - 11:00 am - 1:00 pm

Since 2003, Berkeley's weekly midday all-ages community freestyle dance at Ashkenaz and online. Join us for a PUSH Dance Company class where you can experience the movement and process of creation that takes place in seasonal rehearsals. A Taste of Odissi Indian Classical Dance

A Taste of Odissi Dance provides you a glimpse of one of eight Indian classical dance forms, Odissi, known for its stunning visual beauty with fluid graceful movements punctuated by sculptural poses. Guru Shradha, a premier Odissi company and institution in the U.S., presents this mini performance followed by a class to give you the special opportunity to experience this intricate dance form for FREE. We have loved being a part of Bay Area Dance Week for many years!

Expanding choreographic expression through Iranian-Persian hand movements

A key characteristic of Iranian-Persian dance is the expressive hand movements. Engaging the hands and fingers while dancing expands the dancer’s choreographic expression.
During this workshop, dancers will learn 3 elemental hand movements from Iranian dance vocabulary within the context of Iranian classical music and dance, and then explore them through Contemporary dance improvisation, using various genres of Western music. Dancers are encouraged to bring a favorite song for improvisation.

Kathy Mata Ballet is celebrating Bay Area Dance Week 2024 and will present classical and contemporary ballet pieces, performed with live accompaniment. West African Guinean w/ Naby Bangoura - 7:15 pm - 8:45 pm

In these classes you will experience the traditional rhythms, dances, and songs of Guinea. You will also learn the meaning of the different rhythms and their accompanying songs and dances. Some of the rhythms/ dances we will explore are used for weddings, baby-naming ceremonies, and circumcision rituals. The class begins with a warm-up, followed with across the floor choreography and concludes with an improvisational dance circle around the drummers.

Join us for an evening of Nordic dance music for all experience levels, with an emphasis on Norwegian dances. No prior dance experience needed. Being more comfortable, natural, and relaxed begins with connection to the body, and it is through this connection that we experience ourselves and our deepest connection with life. We will work individually, in pairs, and as a group doing Self-Breema exercises and Breema partner bodywork.

No prior bodywork experience is necessary, but please be comfortable sitting and working on a padded floor. Dress comfortably and wear long pants, socks, and be fragrance-free.

Dancers need an incredible amount of strength, flexibility, resistance to injury, and body awareness. This class pilates exercises on the reformer, chair, and spring board as well as free weights to help you build a strong foundation for dance. The 55 minute class will be led by the dance and gymnastics informed physical therapists at On the Move Physical Therapy and Pilates.
