Othello

An epic theater experience in two evenings

Audiences experience Toni Morrison’s shattering and meditative play Desdemona, told with the music of the immortal Nina Simone, featuring world- renowned crossover soprano Claron McFadden. The work comes to life within a sculpture installation by renowned visual artist Maya Freelon.

Audiences then take in an audacious reimagining of Verdi and Shakespeare’s Othello, with new musical “sea-interludes” composed and performed by Matthew Evan Taylor and in an all new English poetic treatment by Andrew Albin, featuring the searing images of British visual artist Keith Piper.

Multifaceted artist Maribeth Diggle takes the role of Desdemona in both evenings.

AntiCone

By Natasha Mirny and Tia Shearer - Happy Theater

June 23 – 26

AntiCone, inspired by Sophocles’ Antigone, is the largely wordless story of an immigrant who is put to work building a wall against her country of origin (and, therefore, her brothers), under the dangerous eye of new leader, Creon, and against the pull of her ancient namesake.

Scored by the evocative and visceral original music of Alexander Nikitin, the play combines physical theatre, clowning, and audience interaction, with unique, powerful dances choreographed and performed by Moscow-trained Natasha Mirny as Antigone. Tia Shearer, who has been called one of DC’s “most versatile actors” (BroadwayWorld) and a “straight up chameleon” (DC Theatre Scene), plays the five characters surrounding Antigone, including Creon, her brother, and the Chorus. The team is rounded out by 25 bright orange traffic cones.

What started as an “alt. country by the books sound” quickly expanded to a looser sense of Americana, incorporating elements of pedal steel and acoustic instrumentation as a background for songwriter Andrew Grimm’s musings on what holds us together and pushes us apart.
