Business Pollution Prevention

Protecting Local Waters

New City Program

We are building a program that requires existing businesses and all publicly owned sites in Auburn, to take measures to stop water pollution. When contaminated runoff enters the stormwater system it is carried to local waters.

This program is a requirement of the Western Washington Phase II Municipal Stormwater Permit that is issued to the City by the Department of Ecology.

Closing your dumpster is a BMP.

Water Pollution Prevention Ordinance

The Department of Ecology’s mandate is met by creating an ordinance that requires adoption of best management practices (BMPs) to prevent pollution from entering the stormwater system. BMPs that prevent pollution include operational and structural activities such as:

-Covering stored or stockpiled materials using tarps or sheds.

-Regular sweeping and cleaning of material storage spaces, parking lots and dumpster areas.

-Keeping lids closed on waste, recycling, compost, and grease containers.

- Have a spill kit and spill plan on-site, and train staff to quickly contain and clean up leaks and spills.

-Construction of permanent structural treatment facilities on property if operational BMPs are not effective.

Site inspections will begin in 2023 and be prioritized by site activities and risks to local water ways.

Attention, business owners in unincorporated King County

The King County Local Services Business Survey is open for responses. We’ll use your responses to develop services and programs to support businesses in unincorporated King County. By taking this 10-minute survey, you’ll give us information that helps us help businesses in your community.

Please tell us about your business and how you have managed your operations the last couple of years. Did you seek and get business grants? Was technical assistance available to you? Did your business plan change? How would you rate your business response to the changing economy today?

We want to hear from all businesses in unincorporated King County—from a one-person sole proprietorship in Skyway to a 40-staff farming operation in Fall City or a 200-person medical equipment manufacturer on Vashon Island.

The survey deadline is 1:59 p.m. on Friday, November 18.
