From: Annual Makahiki Festival

Our Makahiki Festival Hawaiian New Year is a day of ceremony, celebration, friendly competition, and culture. The day features the Te Moana Nui Games, a traditional Polynesian sports competition run by Tahiti Mana, as well as local vendors, live music, and performances by local h?lau.
Makahiki, which is marked by the rising of the constellation Makali?i, is a time of celebration in Hawaiian culture, taking place between mid-November and late Winter. The approximately four months of Makahiki historically signified a time of peace, relaxation, and plenty. Makahiki is also a time to celebrate the Polynesian God Lono, the god of fertility, agriculture, and peace. Lono is celebrated by feasting, and by competing in sports and strength competitions.
