AMSET Summer Exhibitions Showcase Permanent Collection

(Beaumont, TX; June 26, 2023) The Art Museum of Southeast Texas (AMSET) is proud to present Summer Days: selections from the permanent collection & Conversations and Connections as its summer exhibitions on view July 1 through September 10, 2023.

After re-scheduling many exhibitions due to Covid, AMSET presents the return of its annual summer tradition of permanent collection exhibitions. Summer Days will include works solely selected from AMSET’s permanent collection of over 1,700 objects. The show is comprised of paintings, drawings, sculptures, and folk art depicting how people partake in summertime activities such as visiting parks, conversing with neighbors, sunbathing, and going to the beach. It will also include artworks from the John Gaston Fairey Collection of Mexican Folk Art.

Conversations and Connections will consist of unique pairings and groupings of artworks from the permanent collection and will be on view alongside Summer Days. Pairings will emphasize similarities and differences in subject matter, elements of art or overall form, drawing connections between artworks. Well-known artists such as sculptor James C. Watkins, painter Paul Manes, and collagist Julie Speed will be paired with regional and folk-art artists such as Robert Madden, Moises Rodriguez, and Mimi DuBois Bolton. The exhibition will include recent acquisitions, works beloved by the community and works drawn from collections storage that have not been viewed in several decades.

A free Family Arts Day will take place in conjunction with these exhibitions on Saturday, August 5, 2023 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Join us for the opening reception of Summer Days & Conversations and Connections on Friday, July 7, 2023, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public. Drinks and light refreshments will be served, with a brief gallery talk at 7:15 p.m. with Curator of Exhibitions, Caitlin Clay.
