Kids or Teen Book of Interest

Graceling by Kristin Cashore

Coming out just one month after Hunger Games in 2008, the first book, Graceling, earned a spot on Publishers Weekly Best Books of the Year list. Its main character, Katsa, has an extraordinary ability in a world in which all those born with extraordinary abilities are considered 'freaks' whether or not their ability is useful. Katsa's is useful to her Uncle, the King--she is phenomenally good at killing. Her conscience, however, leads her to create an Underground council that fights Kings' abuses of power. Her journey of self-discovery, independence and partnership with a fellow Graceling is masterfully and tenderly written. The action also keeps the plot moving. This is a standout read for both young adults and adults at least as compelling as Hunger Games.

The Measure by Nikki Erlick

It seems like any other day. You wake up, pour a cup of coffee, and head out. But today, when you open your front door, waiting for you is a small wooden box. This box holds your fate inside: the answer to the exact number of years you will live. Every person on every continent receives the same box. In an instant, the world is thrust into a collective frenzy. Where did these boxes come from? What do they mean? Is there truth to what they promise? As society comes together and pulls apart, everyone faces the same shocking choice: Do they wish to know how long they’ll live? And, if so, what will they do with that knowledge? Enchanting and deeply uplifting, The Measure is a sweeping, ambitious, and invigorating story about family, friendship, hope, and destiny that encourages us to live life to the fullest.

Spotlight: Non Fiction

Half American: The Epic Story of African Americans Fighting World War II at Home and Abroad by Matthew F. Delmont

Black Americans played crucial roles in nearly every theater of World War II, but they have been largely ignored in historical accounts. Delmont sets the record straight. A vital story well rendered, recounting a legacy that should be recognized, remembered, and applauded. Starred Review in several publications.

Happy-Go-Lucky by David Sedaris

The best-selling author offers a new collection of satirical and humorous essays that chronicle his own life and ordinary moments that turn beautifully absurd, including how he coped with the pandemic, his thoughts on becoming an orphan in his seventh decade, and the battle-scarred America he discovered when he resumed touring.

The Revolutionary Samuel Adams by Stacy Schiff

Thomas Jefferson asserted that if there was any leader of the Revolution, "Samuel Adams was the man." With high-minded ideals and bare-knuckle tactics, Adams led what could be called the greatest campaign of civil resistance in American history. Stacy Schiff returns Adams to his seat of glory, introducing us to the shrewd and eloquent man who supplied the moral backbone of the American Revolution. In The Revolutionary: Samuel Adams, Schiff brings her masterful skills to Adams's improbable life, illuminating his transformation from aimless son of a well-off family to tireless, beguiling radical who mobilized the colonies.
