Entries Invited For Gingerbread House Contest

Nothing conjures up warm, fuzzy feelings quite like gingerbread. It certainly did in the 15th century when Holy Roman Emperor Frederick III faced plummeting support among his countrymen. At the time, gingerbread was an extravagant treat reserved for the wealthy. Frederick commissioned medieval bakers to create thousands of gingerbread “Fredericks” in his likeness, distributed them throughout the realm, and watched his ratings rise.

The Adams County Arts Council’s invites area bakers to keep the warm, fuzzy feelings alive, while delighting thousands of spectators in the process, by submitting a gingerbread house for its 14th Annual Gingerbread Celebration and Holiday Market, Dec 1-3, at the Arts Education Center. Held in conjunction with the annual Gettysburg Christmas Festival, this beloved holiday tradition is sponsored by Kennie’s Market.

The contest is open to families, individuals, young bakers, schools, groups, and nonprofits. The public votes with dollars for the amazing creations. Houses with the most dollars win cash prizes for the bakers. Top prizes of $500 will be awarded with a total of $1,600 to be distributed. Businesses and restaurants are also encouraged to make a gingerbread house and compete for the coveted Ginger Trophy.

Entry forms and more information are available online at www.adamsarts.org, by calling (717) 334-5006, or at the Arts Education Center, 125 S. Washington St. Gettysburg. The deadline for entry forms is November 22.

The mission of the Adams County Arts Council is to cultivate an arts-rich community.
