The goal of the Newport Irish Heritage Month calendar is to include “All things Irish” that will be occurring in the Newport, Rhode Island area throughout March. This includes events sponsored by organizations which promote Irish heritage, culture, and history, including the Museum of Newport Irish History, sponsor of this calendar, and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. A complete list of participating organizations and businesses may be found at the end of this document.

Green Eggs & Ham Brunch: Hibernian Hall, 2 Wellington Ave., Newport, 9 am - 1 pm

Historic Irish Cemetery Tour: 12:30 pm
Take a tour of the historic Saint Joseph Cemetery (known locally as the Barney Street Cemetery). Located at the corner of Barney and Mt. Vernon Streets in Newport, is the oldest Catholic cemetery in Rhode Island, and the site of the state’s first Catholic church (1828), which served Newport’s growing Irish immigrant community. The outdoor tour of approximately 30 minutes, given by a historian/guide, Steve Marino, and sponsored by Museum of Newport Irish History, is held, weather permitting, at 12:30 pm on these two Sundays: March 5, 19. Explore “Irish Newport” on this narrated tour presented by the Museum of Newport Irish History. Two departures: 10 am and 12:30 pm These 2 - hour tours will include stops at sites connected with Newport’s Irish heritage, including Forty Steps and the Barney Street Cemetery. Tours include an introductory visit to the Museum’s Interpretive Center on Lower Thames Street. Sponsored by Viking Tours of Newport in memory of Karen A. Oakley. Historic Irish Cemetery Tour: 12:30 pm
Take a tour of the historic Saint Joseph Cemetery (known locally as the Barney Street Cemetery). Located at the corner of Barney and Mt. Vernon Streets in Newport, is the oldest Catholic cemetery in Rhode Island, and the site of the state’s first Catholic church (1828)), which served Newport’s growing Irish immigrant community. The outdoor tour of approximately 30 minutes, given by a historian/guide, Steve Marino, and sponsored by Museum of Newport Irish History, is held, weather permitting. Reservations required. Meet at the gate on Kingston Ave. near the intersection with Warner Street. Explore historic Saint Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, final resting place of well over 1,000 Newporters of the mid - 1800s through the early 1900s, including countless immigrants from Ireland and firstgeneration Irish Americans. The outdoor tour of approximately 45 minutes will be given by researcher and guide, Steve Marino, and is sponsored by Museum of Newport Irish History. Tour held, weather permitting.
