Welcome to the 41st Annual Rockport Chamber Music Festival, a celebratory return to the stage bringing together over one hundred musicians. From the early sounds of Purcell to exciting new premieres, the programs provide a wide range of music to be enjoyed at the incomparably beautiful Shalin Liu Performance Center.

June 11, 2022

5 PM - Opening Night Celebration

With extraordinary artistry and virtuosity, the Festival Chamber Orchestra brings together an exceptional group of chamber soloists and artists from the string quartet world with members of the Rolston, Verona, Orford, Ulysses and Miró quartets. This conductorless ensemble launches our festival season with a renewed sense of hope and joy.

5 PM - Stella Chen, violin & Henry Kramer, piano

Stella Chen, recipient the 2020 Avery Fisher Grant and the 2020 Lincoln Center Emerging Artist Award, will join with pianist Henry Kramer, praised for his "thrilling [and] triumphant" performances by The New York Times.

7:30 PM - Zukerman Trio

Formed in 2013, the Pinchas Zukerman Trio developed out of violinist Zukerman's acclaimed Zukerman ChamberPlayers, and has since graced the world's greatest stages and many of the globe's major festivals. For his lauded Trio, Zukerman is joined by cellist Amanda Forsyth and pianist Shai Wosner, two of the finest chamber musicians performing today.

5 PM - Frederic Chiu, piano & Chad Hoopes, violin with the Festival Quartet

Artistic Director Barry Shiffman has gathered the finest artists performing today for an evening of spectacular chamber music that culminates with the Schumann Piano Quintet. Pianist Frederic Chiu, who BBC Magazine hailed as "stunningly virtuosic…[with a] sense of spontaneity [that] is often incandescent," joins violinist Chad Hoopes (Avery Fisher Career Grant winner) in the first half of the program. Hoopes then leads the Festival Quartet (including Aaron Boyd, Andrés Díaz and our own Artistic Director Barry Shiffman) to perform with Chiu for the Schumann.

5 PM - Xavier Foley, double bass

Kelly Lin, piano
Winner of the 2016 Young Concert Artists Competition and the 2014 Sphinx Competition, Xavier Foley was hailed by The Philadelphia Inquirer as "… a standout player….a musician who hears borders between styles as limitation best ignored."

7:30 PM - Beethoven & Schubert

Celebrated clarinetist Yoonah Kim collaborates with a spectacular ensemble to present an evening of outstanding chamber works including Beethoven's only Clarinet Trio, Schubert's iconic Shepherd on the Rock, and concluding with Beethoven's popular Septet for winds and strings.

9:45 PM - French Cabaret

Mireille Asselin, soprano | Jonathan Crow, violin | Max Levinson, piano
This cabaret brings a bit of Paris and the Mediterranean to Rockport in an intimate, casual setting on the third floor. The program features violin works by Debussy and Ravel and songs of Edith Piaf, Kurt Weill, Francis Poulenc, and much more.

7:30 PM - Piers Lane, piano

Pianist Piers Lane stands out as an engaging and highly versatile performer, at home equally in solo, chamber and concerto repertoire. He is also the artistic director of the Sydney International Piano Competition.

5 PM: Marc-André Hamelin, piano & Viano Quartet

Winners of the 2019 Banff International Competition and Ensemble-in-Residence at the Curtis Institute, the Viano String Quartet join with the astounding Marc-André Hamelin for this dynamic program.

5 PM - Ray Chen, violin & Julio Elizalde, piano

First Prize Winner of both the 2008 Yehudi Menuhin and 2009 Queen Elizabeth competitions, Ray Chen has built a stunning worldwide career through his dynamic performances and enthralling recordings.

7:30 PM - WU Man, Pipa and Hsin-Yun Huang, viola

Acclaimed violist Hsin-Yun Huang joins Wu Man, one of the world's leading pipa players, for the world premiere of Silkroad composer Lei Liang's Mother's Songs (commissioned by Rockport Music) in a compelling program entitled "Strings of Souls" that reflects the Chinese origins of the artists.

11 AM - Family Concert: Members Of A Far Cry
Members of A Far Cry will present a one-hour family-friendly concert for all to enjoy. Free, no tickets required.

7:30 PM - A Far Cry

Called a "world-wide phenomenon" by Boston's WBUR, the Grammy-nominated A Far Cry stands at the forefront of an exciting new generation in classical music. They perform a program entitled "Circle of Life."

5 PM - Brentano String Quartet With Dawn Upshaw, soprano

"Dido Reimagined"
Co-commissioned by Rockport Music, this program starts with early English works by Purcell, Dowland and Locke, and flows toward the famous Lament from Purcell's opera Dido and Aeneas. Composed by Melinda Wagner and with a libretto by Stephanie Fleischmann, this unique monodrama will probe a truly compelling character through the concentrated closeness of the chamber music experience.

First Prize Winner of the 2001 Arthur Rubinstein Piano Competition and an Avery Fisher Grant, Kirill Gerstein has entered the highest ranks of international stars.

11 AM - Morningside Music Bridge Students At NEC

This concert will feature students from the New England Conservatory's Morningside Music Bridge program which seeks to identify and promote outstanding young artists as well as develop long-term partnerships between classical music communities internationally to ultimately build a bridge of understanding and creativity that spans the world. Free, no tickets required.

7:30 PM - Strauss & Brahms

Danbi Um, violin | Christopher Costanza, cello | Stephen Prutsman, piano
Festival favorite Stephen Prutsman joins forces with the "utterly dazzling" (Strad) violinist Danbi Um and acclaimed St. Lawrence Quartet cellist Christopher Costanza for an evening that features pieces by Strauss and Brahms.

9:45 PM - Romani Cabaret

Join for an exciting evening of string virtuosity and fun with classical works inspired by Romani music including Hubay's Scènes de la Csárda, No. 3 and the Rondo alla Zingarese from Brahms's Piano Quartet in G minor.

5 PM - Dover Quartet with Barry Shiffman, viola

First ever quartet-in-residence at the Kennedy Center, the Dover is considered "the young American string quartet of the moment" (The New Yorker). The program features Dvorak's Quintet No. 3 in E-flat major, Op. 97 "American".

6 PM - Closing Night Celebration: Gershwin & Friends

Jens Lindemann, trumpet & Stewart Goodyear, piano
Rockport Festival Jazz Orchestra | Matt Catingub, director
Hailed for his "golden timbre and virtuosic flair" (New York Times), trumpeter Jens Lindemann joins pianist Stewart Goodyear in a spectacular Festival closing celebration featuring a big band arrangement of Gershwin's beloved Rhapsody in Blue as well as music of Duke Ellington, Oscar Peterson, Nat King Cole and more.

Festival Chamber Orchestra, Earl Lee, conductor
Rihab Chaieb, mezzo-soprano & Paul Groves, tenor
Featuring Mahler's orchestral song cycle Das Lied von der Erde (Song of the Earth), this piece evokes an emotional range that will be brought to life by the incomparable voices of Paul Groves and Rihab Chaieb and a chamber orchestra led by BSO assistant conductor Earl Lee.

9:45 PM - Cabaret: Bach To Baker

Danny Koo, violin | Jung-A Bang, piano
Violinist Danny Koo shares music from his latest Warner recording titled Home. Home is more than just a place, it can be a beautiful memory, a hopeful future and a familiar today. Danny is excited to be back ‘home' at Rockport presenting a cabaret with music ranging from J.S. Bach to Chet Baker. This is a night full of fun and may even bring a surprise guest performer.

5 PM - Los Angeles Guitar Quartet

The Grammy Award-winning Los Angeles Guitar Quartet (LAGQ) is one of the most multifaceted groups in any genre. The LAGQ is comprised of four uniquely accomplished musicians bringing a new energy to the concert stage with programs ranging from Bluegrass to Bach.

5 PM - David Deveau, Piano & Andrés Cárdenes, Violin

Rockport Music's former Artistic Director David Deveau returns to perform with his beloved longtime collaborator, violinist Andrés Cárdenes, for a much-anticipated night of Beethoven.
