History:

In the minds and hearts of Westminster’s founding members, the church began long before the first worship service.

In the 1940s there was no Presbyterian Church in the growing West Hartford community, and no church at all west of Main Street to the Farmington town line. There had been, however, a Sunday School in the little schoolhouse on Mountain Road that is now the home of the West Hartford Art League. About 20 children attended, but their parents had to go to Hartford to worship in a Presbyterian church.

A handful of West Hartford residents started talking and praying about forming a new congregation in their hometown. The organizing committee and others interested in the new church heard the Rev. Gurdon Scoville preach at Center City Church in Hartford. Several who came were so impressed they went back for a second service. The organizing committee agreed that he was the right person to lead their new church.

On March 5, 1950 thirteen members of The First Presbyterian Church were dismissed at the morning service to help form the new church. They gathered that afternoon with sixty other people in the basement music room of the First Congregational Church of West Hartford to hold their first service. On March 26, fifty-eight people signed the church charter.

For the summer the congregation moved from the Congregational Church basement to the Buena Vista golf course clubhouse. A sign was propped in the window near a side entrance, pointing the way to Westminster Church. As cold weather began, the church shifted from the unheated clubhouse to Sedgwick Junior High School, and services were held in the auditorium.
