Birth of a City, Birth of a Church:

Central Baptist Church and the City of Miami were born, in that order, in the same week, just two days apart. The same man, John Sewell, was the strategist who brought forth the birth of them both.

Central Baptist Church, which began on July 26, 1896 as First Baptist Church, was one of a number of churches to spring up in this bustling young community on the edge of frontier Florida. When Sewell arrived in Miami on March 3, 1896 (the 51st anniversary of Floridas statehood), he found a wilderness. "There was very little cleared land--- everything a perfect wilderness outside of the little clearing around [the few] homes," he reflected in his memoirs.

Who We Are?

Central Baptist Church is an internationally mission-minded Church in downtown Miami, reaching South Florida's multi-religious, multi-linguistic and culturally diverse population. Every week, we worship and minister in English and Spanish.

To participate in the life of Central is to experience a collage of people and languages. The people who comprise the church represent countries from all over the world. The secret to the unity that we enjoy is our oneness in Christ.

"You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: Love your neighbor as yourself."
