Juneteenth is the oldest celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865 Union soldiers spread the news by foot, that the Civil War had ended and those who were enslaved were now free. Nearly two and a half years after President Lincold signed the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, the end of slavery was finally the official law of the United States.

African American communities across the United States have celebrated Juneteenth on or around June 19th, during which time the community comes together to celebrate freedom.
