Newport is a gateway between New England and Canada. The city lies on the southern shore of Lake Memphremagog, whose name is derived from an Abenaki Indian word meaning "beautiful waters." On the western side of the 32-mile lake rises Owl's Head, named after an American Indian chief. Its 3,360 foot summit offers impressive views.

Lake Memphremagog, offers excellent fishing and hunting opportunities. From late spring to early fall the lake is utilized by boaters, swimmers, jet skis and wind surfers. There is also a Fish and Wildlife Refuge, along the South Bay of Newport, which is a haven to view hundreds of species of native birds and animals.

The City of Newport hosts the largest shopping district in Orleans County for many of the surrounding towns in the northeast kingdom. Discover downtown Newport by visiting the shops on Main Street, walking along waterfront and enjoying the views of Lake Memphremagog. You will want to keep coming back to again and again.

There is plenty to do all year round. You can ski at Jay Peak (20-25 minutes), snowmobile on VAST trails, sail or motorboat to Canada for dinner. Enjoy concerts at the Gateway Center Building on the Waterfront in the summer. Stroll through our parks and enjoy beautiful sunsets over the lake
