Yi Yi and A Brighter Summer Day

Two films from FLC’s most successful retrospective ever return to the big screen by popular demand!

The films of Edward Yang (1947–2007) were among the first to capture the ethos of Taiwan’s rapid modernization. Set in the early 1960s and inspired by the true story of Taiwan’s first juvenile homicide case, A Brighter Summer Day follows rebellious teenager Xiao Si’r as he comes of age amid rival street gangs. Yang’s final film, Yi Yiis a work of extraordinary synchronicity, empathy, and narrative control showcasing the conflicts and anxieties of life in Taiwan through the prism of family.
