Two New Exhibits at the RIHS

Two new exhibits opened at RIHS museums this week!

Make sure to visit the John Brown House and explore the first installation of the museum's reinterpretation, From Forest to Foyer: Rhode Island and the Mahogany Trade in the 18th Century, inspired by historian Jennifer Anderson's acclaimed book, Mahogany: The Costs of Luxury in Early America. This exhibit delves into the intricate narrative of mahogany's emergence as a commodity, intertwined with Rhode Island's ascendancy in the global economy. The story unfolds from the perspectives of free and enslaved woodcutters in the Central American rainforest, ship captains awaiting their cargo in the Bay of Honduras, cabinetmakers purchasing for their lumberyards in Newport, and the buyers of fine furniture and accessories throughout the American colonies and in Europe.

Then, you won’t want to miss the Museum of Work and Culture’s newest art exhibit, What's Your Thing? Celebrating Our Shared Humanity. Featuring a compelling collection of photographs, this exhibit highlights local children and adults living with autism, showcasing their unique passions in a positive light. This exhibit is a collaboration with Precision Medicine in Autism (PRISMA) and includes participants from Rhode Island and Edmonton, Canada. This exhibit is on display from today, April 5th to April 30th in the museum's rotating gallery and was created in partnership with Positive Exposure, a global initiative by photographer Rick Guidotti, known for celebrating human diversity.
