GLOBAL THEATRE PERFORMANCE SERIES

Why theatre matters?

The Global Theatre Performance Series is back for another powerful evening. With a personal passion for theatre that changes the way we see the world, Broadway and off-Broadway producer, Cheryl Wiesenfeld, chose to dive deeper into conversations around incarceration. As curator of the series, Cheryl joined us in our excitement to not only present social justice driven theatre, but to provide space and time for the artists to work through the creative process with a week-long residency. With this in mind, Cheryl invited Ron Jenkins to bring his latest work, Surviving Troubled Waters: From Prison to Freedom through Music, to the Quick stage. Past Global Theatre evenings have included Gun Country, CELL, Women on Fire, Right Before I Go., and Shared Sentences.

Having received multiple fellowships and awards, Ron Jenkins has focused much of his work on documentary plays with particular attention to the stories of incarcerated individuals. With this new work, Jenkins invites Naomi Wilson and BL Shirelle to share their stories. Both artists will perform their work on stage joined by Dinny Aletheiani. Through gospel, rap, and soul, Naomi and BL share their personal experiences and how they made their way through the system and ultimately now work to advocate for those still incarcerated.

In this intimate evening of theatre and music, the audience bears witness as the work strives to help us listen and understand what these women have experienced and to encourage us to consider the impact of incarceration on our communities. As part of a Jesuit institution that engages daily in the mission of service to others through social justice driven education and programming, the Quick is honored to share this evening of moving theatre with you.
