Upcoming Veterans Day Holiday - November 11, 2022

City Hall will be closed on Friday, November 11, 2022, in recognition of the Veterans Day Holiday. The date of Veterans Day relates to the end of World War I, when an armistice was signed on the 11th day of the 11th month, and was 'the war to end all wars.' Countless men and women, since that time, have continued to proudly serve this country and enter into harms way, so we can all enjoy the freedoms we have today! So, please thank a veteran for his or her service and remember the heroes that never returned home from the battlefield.

Trash pick-up from Waste Connections, the City's residential hauler, will not be effected by this holiday. City Hall will reopen on Monday, November 14, 2022, at 8:00 a.m.

Internet Access Project <+> City of Wildwood-Spectrum
UPDATE #4 - October 14, 2022

As announced in late December 2021, the City has entered into an agreement with Spectrum Mid-America LLC to design, install and operate high-speed broadband internet service for the residents of Wildwood. Completing the number one priority of the City’s five-year Strategic Plan, this partnership with Spectrum will deliver fiber-based, high-speed internet service to the unserved and underserved areas of Wildwood who have been waiting for this service for many years. The City is investing $6.75 million in this project - that come from recent federal stimulus funds - and the project is expected to be completed within twenty-four months.

The FOURTH UPDATE on the high-speed internet access project has just been issued by the City Administrator, Steve Cross, and provides great information on the project's current status.

Dear Wildwood Resident,

The City of Wildwood is pleased to provide this fourth update to the Spectrum internet project. This update includes Maps 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 depicting the next areas where Spectrum has notified the City that construction will begin. This update also includes the map entitled Total Project Area which denotes the entire project area for Phase 1 of the buildout as well as where each of the 10 maps fall within the total project area. Please note that Spectrum has informed the City that there will be a total of 16 maps that comprise the Total Project Area. Please also note that these maps are an approximation of the buildout area and may not exactly depict the boundaries of where construction begins and ends. If you have a question as to whether your street address is included in the buildout area, please send an email to Steve Cross at the email address noted below. The address is the key determinant as to which phase of the buildout your home may be in. Please also note that this project, to bring high-speed internet to the City of Wildwood, will be accomplished in phases. Phase 1 encompasses approximately 2,025 homes in the area noted on the map as the Total Project Area. Construction on Phase 1 began in September 2022 and is anticipated to be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2024. Phase 2 is comprised of approximately 225 homes, and construction on this phase is anticipated to begin shortly after the completion of phase 1. Additional addresses that are not in Phase 1 or Phase 2 are being accumulated and will be included in Phase 3.

Current estimates from Spectrum relative to the anticipated date for start of construction as well as anticipated date for internet service from Spectrum are as follows (Note: these dates may differ from those previously provided by Spectrum due to construction delays beyond their control):

As with any project of similar scope, this timeframe is subject to change due to unforeseen construction delays. The City will make every effort to update residents as to any changes in this schedule.

If you have not already done so, please go to the City’s website, www.cityofwildwood.com, and locate the box at the bottom of the first page of our website noted as Internet Access Project Updates. If you click on this box, you will be able to enter your name, street address and email address to receive a direct email of each update when it is distributed.  If you do not have access to the City’s website, please feel free to send your information via email to [email protected] and the City will make sure your name gets added to the list.  Updates will also be included in the weekly E-Newsletter (e-newsletter signup), as well as being posted on the City’s Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter social media sites, and we will include a link to the Internet Access Project Updates page on the website for you to sign up for the email updates.

Finally, these updates will also be available in print, and they will be posted on the wall in the second-floor vestibule of City Hall, as well as at the City’s Al Foster, Community, Bluff View, Anniversary and Green Pines Parks.

We are very excited that we are now able to move forward with the City’s most important strategic goal for our residents. This project will take up to 24 months to complete, but at the end of this time period, every resident in Wildwood should have access to reliable, high-speed internet for their homes and businesses.

If you have any questions relative to the high-speed internet project, please feel free to reach out to Steve Cross, City Administrator.

Thank you.

Student Design Competition - Route 66 Roadside Park

The City of Wildwood, the Student Route 66 Taskforce, and the Route 66 Roadside Project Committee are pleased to announce that Cheryl Rock’s 4th Hour 3D Modeling Class at LaSalle Springs Middle School has taken 1st place in the Student Design Competition for the future park.  Congratulations to Garrett Anders, Preston Field, Charles Simons, Zach Graves-Wilken, Trevor Sanson, Sammi Brown, Brooke Dammrich, Cole Thornton, Keith Major and Kaiden Pullen! The winning entry consisted of two Route 66 signs with monkey bars in-between, a platform with a slide, and a climbing wall on the back of the sign.

2nd Place was awarded to Lakshana Gokul, 5th grader at Green Pines Elementary School for her Route 66 mural design featuring a vintage car and Big Chief Roadhouse, a local landmark.

3rd Place was awarded to Muskaan Bothra, 2nd grader at Green Pines Elementary School, for her entry way structure modeled after the present Big Chief Roadhouse and former Big Chief Cabin Hotel.  The cylindrical shape with opening for visitors included features such as a vintage car photo op area, fusion signage of Wildwood and the Route 66 logo, and a present-day map of Wildwood’s Route 66, with historic landmarks identified upon it.

Both the 2nd and 3rd place finalists also have the potential for aspects of their ideas to be incorporated into the final design of the park. All winners and finalists will be invited to the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the future park, which the City hopes to conduct prior to 2026, the 100th anniversary of Route 66 or the “Mother Road.” Around 40 students from the local area participated in the competition in all.  Great job to all participants!

A special thanks goes out to Brian Reed, K-12 STEM Curriculum Coordinator, Jordan McGaughey, K-12 Social Studies Curriculum Coordinator, educators Cheryl Rock, Zachary Avila, and Meghan O’Donnell, and the Student Route 66 Taskforce Members from Rockwood School District for their efforts to organize the school community around this project.

SWT Design, the project consultant, will be incorporating this design idea into the “photo op” element for the future park. The next formal Pin-Up Review of a preferred Project Design Concept will take place on Thursday, December 1, 2022, at 6:30 p.m., at Wildwood City Hall, in City Council Chambers. More information about the Route 66 Roadside Park Project can be found at www.cityofwildwood.com/route66roadsidepark.

Tree Preservation and Management Practices in Wildwood

With Fall around the corner, many property owners are out in their yards/lots and doing clean-up and new plantings. If you are removing a tree or trees, the City does have regulations to protect "grand" types. These trees are those types that have grown to significant sizes. To ensure that a "Grand" tree is not removed, before inspection, the City asks that the property owner contact the Department of Planning and arrange a same or next-day inspection and authorization. It's easy and quick! You can contact the Department of Planning at (636) 458-0440 to set up that site visit. Thank you for your cooperation!

New Tree Care Steps - Wildwood Door Hanger

With ash trees being removed throughout the City due to the Emerald Ash Borer, new trees are being planted to replace them. If you are a homeowner receiving one (1) or more of these new trees, the City, through its contractor, is placing a door hanger to advise you of the best care steps for them. These steps are good for trees any homeowner may be planting this Fall. Kudos to the City's Department Public Works on a great resource, and nice design!
