Various Intersections Upgraded for Pedestrian Safety!

The Public Works Department's Mobility and Traffic Engineering Division has been implementing several enhancements at intersections with traffic signals to better serve pedestrians.  These changes are part of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Action Plan adopted by the City Council in June 2020 and the Local Road Safety Plan adopted by the City Council in November 2021.  Both of these plans support the City's goal to reduce pedestrian and bicycle fatalities and severe injuries on our roadways to zero!

Pedestrian Head Start

Our new traffic signal timers give pedestrians a 4 second head start when entering a signalized intersection with a corresponding green signal in the same direction of travel.  A Leading Pedestrian Interval (LPI) enhances the visibility of pedestrians in the intersection and reinforces their right-of-way over motorists turning their vehicles. According to the National Association of City Transportation Officials, LPIs "have been shown to reduce pedestrian-vehicle collisions as much as 60% at treated intersections."

LPIs with a 4 second head start are currently active at the eight intersections listed below, with more to come soon. This video shows the one at Culver Boulevard at Madison Avenue in action.

-Overland Avenue at Farragut Drive

-Overland Avenue at Braddock Drive

-Culver Boulevard at Main Street

-Culver Boulevard at Lafayette Place

-Culver Boulevard at Madison Avenue

-Sepulveda Boulevard at Lindblade Street

-Sepulveda Boulevard at Braddock Drive

-Washington Boulevard at Elenda Street

Contactless Pedestrian Push Buttons

Eight new contactless push buttons have been installed at the intersection of Culver Boulevard and Duquesne Avenue.  A pedestrian can activate the sensor by waiving their hand in front of the button up to 6” away.  Check out this video for a demonstration.  All new pedestrian push buttons installed in the City will be contactless.

Where: Dr. Paul Carlson Park, 10400 Braddock Drive, Culver City, CA 90232

Cybernella is a futuristic fairy tale written by famed children's playwright Claire Boiko. It takes the classic Cinderella into the future, where the title character is a robot housekeeper, working her circuits to the bone for two self obsessed, jet-setting sisters and their publicity seeking mom. Who will win the heart of royal rock star Prince Harmony?

Rock Hopper, Penguin Detective, by Culver City Public Theatre board member and director Trace Oakley, is a hilarious caper with a hard-nosed arctic private eye, who attempts to crack the case of a flock of missing sheep belonging to a certain Bo Peep.

Both shows are directed by Trace Oakley. The cast includes Hannah Connally, Alehn James, Leah Jarvik, Jordan Jenkins, Lauren B. Leigh, Courtney Shaffer and Zahra Zaveri. The stage manager is Kevin Bocicaut, sound design by Susan Stangl, and costume design by Daniel Kruger.

“Any time I present a kids' show, I want to genuinely entertain the whole family – the kids, of course, but also the parents who brought them, the relatives or friends and even the older siblings who are 'too cool' for children's entertainment,” says Oakley.
